Technical Director, Process Development

This is a salaried exempt position.

ADM, a global leader in human and animal nutrition and the world’s premier agricultural origination and processing company, has an opening for a Technical Director at our Corporate Research center located in Decatur, Illinois! This position is responsible for the technical aspects of projects in the Process Development Group (\"Group\") and will provide technical leadership and use the group’s deep knowledge resources to enhance ADM’s processing capabilities.

We are looking for a highly motivated scientist to assess existing and innovative technologies, as well as the development of plans to deploy technology-based solutions at industrial scale, and will be responsible for activities from bench scale to commercial scale!

Job responsibilities

  • Own the early phase technical assessments of new opportunities

  • Perform quick technical and economic evaluations of opportunities presented by leadership

  • Support Group with activities related to experimental design, execution, piloting, and scale up/scale down processes

  • Lead technology scouting activities for Group to identify relevant technologies for ADM operations, and collaborate with business leads to identify value creating projects

  • Lead all aspects of and/or support the development of:

  • Technical reports and technology transfer packages

  • Experimental plans for projects in the portfolio

  • Cost and financial models

  • Core technical capabilities and work with area leads to develop plans

  • Collaborate with Group Director to develop strategic plan for the Group, and ensure project portfolio aligns with direction set by leadership

  • Participate in due diligence activities from a technical perspective related to a range of potential business opportunities, including partnerships and joint ventures

  • Work with team members and managers to ensure technical work done is sound and follows scientific methods to provide high quality information in a resource efficient manner

  • Participate in risk workshops and provide input on technical risks

  • Work with legal and regulatory groups on topics related to ongoing projects

Skills and proficiencies

  • PhD or MS degree with 10+ years of industry experience, or BS with 15+ equivalent experience, in Chemical Engineering/Chemistry or related fields

  • Strong technical background in a wide range of unit operations with experience in a variety industrial and food processes

  • Experience with fermentation technology is preferred, as well as experience in one or more of the following areas: Corn Processing, Soybean Processing, Protein Processing, and Industrial Chemicals Processing

  • Proven record of successful implementation of technology at commercial scale

  • Understanding of process scale-up and experience with pilot scale equipment

  • Ability to function within a matrix project management environment, often acting as a project leader by guiding the technical direction of projects and driving scientific excellence while utilizing project management skills

  • Strong leadership skills to encourage open collaboration, promote constructive feedback, and motivate a diverse group of project team members

  • Effective communication skills to optimally engage colleagues in Research, Operations, business groups, and external organizations

  • Principled dedication to safety
