Quality Control Specialist/Microbiologist – Marshall, MN

This is a full-time, exempt level position.

Job Summary

This position is responsible for conducting microbiological testing of products to ensure food safety and quality. This position will facilitate laboratory output of microbiological testing results and coordinate the environmental monitoring program for the facility. This position will provide leadership to the QC Laboratory team in addition to planning and deploying continuous improvement opportunities for laboratory instrumentation, laboratory procedures, and laboratory colleagues. This position will report to the QC Lab Manager.

Primary Job Functions

  • Support the QC lab safety program and help facilitate ADM safety initiatives

  • Implement and support Performance Excellence in the microbiology laboratory

  • Ensure compliance with safety, quality, and environmental policies and procedures for all laboratory colleagues

  • Train and develop laboratory technicians in all functions of the microbiology lab including, but not limited to, aseptic techniques, environmental monitoring swabs, and traditional plating

  • Ensure proficiency of laboratory technicians that complete functions in the microbiology lab

  • Use a microscope to identify cell characteristics

  • Facilitate the development, approval, implementation, and maintenance of laboratory records, policies, and procedures, adhering to applicable governmental and company standards and regulations

  • Ensure standardization, maintenance, and optimization of data inputs and outputs as key performance indicators and metrics of success

  • Lead all aspects for the selection, installation, validation, and maintenance of laboratory instrumentation

  • Be a member of the Food Safety Team

  • Provide microbiological expertise for colleague education on and compliance with applicable human and animal food safety protocols and expectations

  • Collaborate with QA and Operations leadership to implement and develop human and animal food safety programs

  • Help identify potential quality and food safety impacts when processes are changed

  • Provide technical consultation to Operations for microbiological analysis

  • Collaborate with other ADM locations on laboratory troubleshooting, improvement, and standardization objectives

  • Develop, implement, and maintain laboratory records and procedures, adhering to applicable food standards and regulations, as well as ADM Quality initiatives

  • Facilitate continuous improvement in the Quality Department and entire plant

  • Assist in root-cause analyses for quality and food safety non-compliance

  • Help provide troubleshooting support to the microbiology lab on weekends and holidays and outside of regular business hours

  • Complete other tasks as assigned

Job Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in biology or microbiology (or other relevant field) preferred

  • QA/QC experience preferred

  • Leadership experience preferred

  • Strong safety record and dedication to safety initiatives

  • Solid understanding of Microsoft Office Suite desired

  • Solid understanding of statistics desired

  • Solid understanding of cGMP, cGLP, and FCC desired

  • Solid understanding of HACCP preferred

  • Ability to both work as a team member and independently

  • Excellent interpersonal skills to provide mentorship and feedback

  • Desire to see continuous improvements in processes and programs

Working Conditions
