Job Summary

This position has overall responsibility for the safety and processes related to the construction and management of projects at the Marshall Corn Processing Facility. The manager will be responsible for evaluating future engineering projects developed by the engineering team and establishing project economics and schedules. Approved projects may be managed by the manager includes, but is not limited to, design, construction, managing resources, prioritizing and monitoring engineering workflow. The Engineering Manager will also have extensive interaction with hourly employees in a manufacturing environment.

Essential Job Function

  • Manager will develop processes to meet project deliverables including installation cost, quality, schedule, and commissioning.

  • Assist in the development, monitoring, and updating of standards to maximize efficiencies and reduce labor. Responsible for the quality of assigned engineering and design; ensuring compliance with all relevant engineering standards and internal procedures.

  • Provide written and verbal communication to managers and other stakeholders of project progress reports. Assist in troubleshooting production problems, optimizing yields and productivity, and controlling costs.

  • Supervise the performance of direct reports.

  • Manage policies and procedures to comply with safety, environmental, and quality requirements.

  • Interface at all levels of the organization and work effectively as a member of the engineering leadership team to provide coordinated direction for teams with regards to safety, GMP, and proper regulatory adherence.

  • Investigates the means by which department procedures can be improved, and initiates improvements in the efficiency of department operations. Researches and makes recommendations regarding process improvements / modifications that might improve design, quality, reliability, and reduce manufacturing costs.

  • Uses sketches, layouts, and submitted data to formulate and visualize original equipment design concepts for production processes. Resolves complex problems, analyzes design concepts as to the feasibility of manufacturing and related costs.

  • Provide Engineering review and sign off on facility MOCs in areas affected.

  • Provide leadership and mentoring for colleague development.

  • Follow the FEL Project Management Process for project development.

Job Requirements

  • Demonstrated participation and leadership in plant safety programs and process hazard analysis. Experience leading teams in exemplary safety practices is required.

  • Demonstrated ability to plan, organize, and manage personnel, budgets, schedules, and other resources. Ability to manage resources within multiple ongoing tasks and strive for continuous improvement.

  • Excellent communication skills – both oral and detailed written are needed to be effective in this position with resources to manage employee, contractor and vendor relationships.

  • Strong leadership, management, and interpersonal skills are necessary to effectively interact with multiple employees, management personnel, and other stakeholders. Interpersonal skills employed include handling conflict; motivating, instructing, and training personnel in a fair, honest, and direct way.

  • Demonstrated skills and abilities in negotiating contracts with vendors and contractors.

  • General knowledge of software systems such as Maximo, Microsoft Office applications (Project, Excel, Access, Word, and SharePoint) and CAD.

  • Minimum of Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or Ag Engineering discipline.

  • General knowledge of software systems such as Maximo, Microsoft Office applications (Project, Excel, Access, Word, and SharePoint) and CAD.

  • 5+ years of managing major capital projects.

  • Experience in Agricultural Processing is preferred.

  • Experience and knowledge of local, state and federal regulations related to engineering and construction projects including OSHA, EPA, construction, electrical and NFPA.

  • The scope of the position may have exposure to and use of chemicals, solvents, and cleaners that may be hazardous and/or cause injury if specific instructions regarding their mixture, use, and disposal/storage are not properly followed.

  • Inside areas:

  • Spring / Summer: Temperatures in some areas of the facility will be up to or exceed 100 degrees

  • Fall / Winter: Temperatures in the facility may be at or below freezing.

  • Outside areas:

  • Spring / Summer: Outside temperature may be up to or exceed 100 degrees with potential for high humidity. May be exposed to inclement weather conditions including, but not limited to, rain and wind.

  • Fall / Winter: Outside temperatures may reach freezing or below. May be exposed to inclement weather including, freezing rain, sleet, snow and wind.

  • Some manufacturing processes within the facility are highly reliant on machinery and other processing equipment and, as a result, noise levels may reach or exceed 85 decibels and require use of hearing protection for most of the work shift.

Physical Requirements

  • Must be able to lift up to 25lbs from waist to shoulder on an occasional basis

  • No push/pull requirement

  • Must be able to walk 1-3 hours

  • Must be able to sit 5-8 hours

  • Must be able to squat/kneel on an occasional basis

  • Must be able to climb stairs/ladders on an occasional basis

  • Constant computer/keyboarding
